Zane & Hunter’s Montana Wedding at The Cabins at Blacktail
I met Zane and Hunter three years ago through mutual friends, and we’ve been friends ever since. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to photograph different parts of their story, including their engagement session in Glacier National Park and another shoot at the Clydesdale Outpost a few months later. By the time their wedding day came around at The Cabins at Blacktail in Montana, it felt especially meaningful to be the one documenting it.
A Personal Wedding Day in Montana
Their day was relaxed, personal, and full of moments that felt true to them. Right before their first look, we realized Hunter was missing his boutonniere. Instead of rushing through it, Zane and Hunter decided to pause until we found it, so I went searching before we started again. It ended up being one of those small wedding day moments that made everything feel even more real.
Why Montana Is a Beautiful Place for Any Kind of Wedding
You get to create the kind of day that feels right for you.
One of the best things about getting married in Northwest Montana is how much freedom you have. You’re not stuck in a traditional ballroom setting or forced into a timeline that doesn’t fit your day. Zane and Hunter chose The Cabins at Blacktail because it gave them privacy, beautiful scenery, and space to celebrate in a way that felt true to them. It was quiet, personal, and surrounded by nature — no pressure to follow traditions that didn’t matter to them. There’s space for both adventure and connection.
Their wedding day was part of a bigger story that started with their engagement session in Glacier National Park. That’s something I always love encouraging couples to think about. In Montana, your wedding experience does not have to be limited to a few rushed hours. You can build in room for multiple meaningful moments instead of trying to squeeze everything into one packed timeline.
That can look like:
private portraits in the mountains
a relaxed ceremony with family
time to actually be present with your guests
golden hour photos without feeling rushed
When your schedule has breathing room, the whole day feels better.
Light and timing can make a huge difference.
In the summer, sunset in Northwest Montana can get surprisingly late, sometimes close to 10 p.m. Between the long days, mountain shadows, and constantly changing conditions, timing really matters. That’s why working with someone who understands how light moves through these landscapes can make such a big difference — especially if those soft, glowy evening photos are important to you. Zane and Hunter trusted the process, and it paid off beautifully. The weather becomes part of the experience.
Montana is stunning, but it is definitely unpredictable. Wind, shifting clouds, summer haze, and sudden temperature changes are all part of the deal. Building flexibility into your wedding plans is not about expecting something to go wrong — it’s about giving yourself space to enjoy the day no matter what. In my experience, when couples are relaxed and not stressed about every little shift in the plan, everything feels better and photographs better too.
Real Moments That Made the Day Special
One of my favorite things about their wedding was how natural everything felt. Nothing was forced, and the whole day reflected who they are as a couple. They even brought their dogs to the ceremony, which made the day feel even more personal, and of course we made time for photos with them too.
Planning an LGBTQ+ Wedding in Montana
Zane and Hunter’s day is such a good reminder that planning an LGBTQ+ wedding in Montana can feel beautiful, meaningful, and fully your own. You do not have to fit your relationship into outdated traditions to have an incredible wedding day. Whether you are planning something intimate in the mountains or a larger celebration with family and friends, Montana gives couples space to create a day that feels honest and personal.
The Cabins at Blacktail Wedding Venue for LGBTQ+ Couples
If you’re looking for a Montana wedding venue near Kalispell that feels private, peaceful, and connected to nature, The Cabins at Blacktail is such a great option — especially for couples who want a day that feels personal and relaxed. Wedding Style That Works Beautifully in Montana
Montana landscapes are full of rich greens, blues, and earthy tones — especially in summer — so suit colors that complement the environment photograph really well. If you’re both wearing suits, options like deep green, warm brown, navy, soft neutrals, or subtle jewel tones look amazing out here. A little contrast between partners can also stand out beautifully against the scenery.
Most importantly, wear what feels like you. The best “style” is confidence — and that always shows up in photos.
