How to Plan Your Dream Elopement in Glacier National Park

If you’re here, I’m guessing you’re dreaming about saying your vows surrounded by Glacier’s wild peaks and glassy alpine lakes, and honestly? You’re in the right place.

This guide is for the couples who feel most at home in the mountains. The ones who want something intentional, intimate, and a little adventurous. Whether you’re just starting to explore the idea of a Glacier National Park elopement or you’re ready to start locking in the details, I’m here to walk you through it all, step by step.

1. Your Elopement Planning Checklist

Here’s a quick list to get you organized:

  • Book your photographer

  • Choose your wedding date

  • Select your ceremony location

  • Submit your permit application and reserve vehicle access

  • Book flights, lodging, and transportation

  • Finalize your wedding vendors

  • Share a packing list with any guests

  • Steam wedding outfits and prep accessories

  • Show up and HAVE THE BEST TIME!

2. Choosing Your Photographer

Picking the right photographer is crucial. They’ll not only capture your memories but also help with location scouting, vendor referrals, and logistics. Here are some tips for finding the perfect match:

  • Look for a photographer whose personality clicks with yours

  • Choose someone who’s genuinely excited to help make your day special

  • Find someone with experience shooting in Glacier and familiarity with the park’s guidelines

  • Ensure their photography style aligns with your vision

  • Bonus points if their name is Stan... Just saying!

I know Glacier National Park inside and out, and I’d love to be part of your elopement adventure!

3. Best Times to Get Married in Glacier

The best times to get married in Glacier National Park are from late June to mid-September. This period generally offers the most reliable weather, warm temperatures, and open roads and trails. Here’s a breakdown of each season to help you pick the ideal time:

  • 1. Late Spring to Early Summer (Late June - Early July)

Pros: Snow is melting, making waterfalls especially dramatic, and the wildflowers are starting to bloom.

Cons: Some areas may still be inaccessible due to lingering snow, and the weather can be unpredictable with rain showers or chilly temperatures at higher elevations.

  • 2. Mid to Late Summer (July - Mid-September)

Pros: This is the peak wedding season due to optimal weather and accessibility. The famous Going-to-the-Sun Road is open, allowing you and your guests to access the best viewpoints. Lakes are clear, mountains lush, and there are fewer weather-related concerns.

Cons: Higher volume of visitors means popular spots may be busy, so plan for a sunrise or sunset ceremony for more privacy.

  • 3. Early Fall (Mid-September - Early October)

Pros: Fall colors start to emerge, making for beautiful, vibrant backdrops. Visitor numbers start to dwindle, creating a more intimate setting. Weather is generally cool and comfortable.

Cons: The Going-to-the-Sun Road and other high-elevation areas may begin closing for the season due to snow. You’ll want a backup plan in case of early snowfall.

For a Glacier wedding, sunrise and sunset provide the best lighting for photos and often fewer crowds. Just be sure to obtain a wedding permit and consider that the weather in Glacier can change rapidly!

4. Finding Your Ceremony Spot

Glacier Park has designated areas for ceremonies, and each has specific group size limits. Here are my top picks:

1. Lake McDonaldDescription

  • Pros: Easy access, particularly near Apgar Village, and ideal for sunset ceremonies. It also offers nearby facilities for guests.

  • Cons: As a popular destination, it can get crowded, especially in summer. Early morning or weekday ceremonies can provide more privacy.

    2. Many Glacier Hotel Area

  • Pros: Dramatic mountain backdrops with iconic views, plus close access to hiking trails and stunning photo locations.

  • Cons: Remote location with limited lodging, so early reservations are a must, and visitor traffic is high in peak season.

    3. Two Medicine Lake

  • Pros: Fewer crowds than other spots, with a variety of ceremony spots along the shore or nearby trails.

  • Cons: Limited facilities, so you’ll need to plan for essentials, especially if your ceremony is larger.

    4. Apgar Amphitheater

  • Pros: Convenient and accessible for guests, with seating already provided. It’s surrounded by trees and provides filtered views of Lake McDonald.

  • Cons: Limited to smaller groups, and the amphitheater structure can restrict open views of the lake.

    5. Logan Pass (When Open)

  • Pros: Incredible panoramic views and unique wildlife like mountain goats. Ideal for adventurous couples.

  • Cons: Weather is unpredictable, and it’s only accessible in mid-summer. Crowds are common, so early or late-day ceremonies are best.

Ask your photographer about what location fits your vision. If you’re unsure, just ask and I will help you navigate the park :)

5. Navigating Permits and Park Access

Elopement Permits

You’ll need a permit to have your ceremony in Glacier. Apply as soon as possible—permits are available no more than a year in advance and no later than 20 days before your date. Here’s the process:

  • Complete the permit application

  • Pay the $125 non-refundable fee

  • Await confirmation from the park

  • Bring a copy of the permit on your wedding day

You can apply and find more details on Glacier’s official website or use this link: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/weddings.htm

Vehicle Reservations, Entrance Fees and Shuttles

  • No more vehicle reservations: Glacier National Park will not require timed vehicle reservations to enter the park in 2026, including Going-to-the-Sun Road. You can drive in without booking a reservation months ahead.

  • Three-Hour Time Limit: Starting July 1 (weather permitting), all private vehicles parked at Logan Pass will be limited to a maximum of 3 hours. This limit is intended to turn over parking faster so more visitors get a chance to access the area.

  • The park is piloting a ticketed shuttle system to Logan Pass for people planning longer hikes (like the Highline Trail or longer backcountry access).

  • Shuttle tickets must be booked in advance — they won’t be sold at the park, and cell service is spotty once you’re inside the park, so save or print tickets ahead of time.

  • All riders age 2+ must have a ticket.

  • Park passes are still required: You still need a park entrance pass (like a daily pass or an America the Beautiful pass) to enter Glacier National Park.

6. Booking Lodging & Vendors

Consider staying inside the park for a full immersion experience or choose a nearby Airbnb for convenience. Campsites and lodges fill up quickly, so book early. Lake Mcdonald Lodge is beautiful and totally recommend visiting if you cannot stay there!

You’ll also need to book vendors such as florists, and hairstylists, etc. If you work with me, I’ll provide a list of local vendors I recommend, making your planning even easier.
